The Orlando Philharmonic continues its 20th Anniversary celebration with the return of a musical giant, Sarah Chang, violinist extraordinaire. Ms. Chang makes two appearances with the Philharmonic – Saturday, January 26 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, January 27 at 3:00 p.m., at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre.
Alasdair Neale, conducts the program which showcases the orchestra in the brooding emotional drama of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony and Rossini’s popular Semiramide Overture. But it is the appearance of violin virtuoso Sarah Chang that will make the performances unforgettable.
For pure American lyricism, no work outshines Barber’s Violin Concerto or Ms. Chang’s incomparable talents. Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto (1940) is one of the most lyrically beautiful and technically challenging string concertos of the 20th Century. The opening of the Violin Concerto is one of the most magical and spellbinding in the entire repertoire.
This milestone year has brought a sense of occasion to every Orlando Philharmonic concert. It has been a season of great repertoire and star appearances, but none that shine brighter than Sarah Chang.
“Her gifts are at a level so removed from the rest of us that all we can do is feel the appropriate awe and then wonder on the mysteries of nature. The ancients would certainly have had Ms. Chang emerging fully formed from some Botticellian scallop shell.” – The New York Times
Sarah Chang is recognized as one of the world’s great violinists. Since her debut with the New York Philharmonic at the age of 8 she has performed with the greatest orchestras, conductors and accompanists internationally in a career spanning more than two decades. In 2012, she will have recorded exclusively for EMI Classics for 20 years.
Ms. Chang tours extensively throughout the world, including in the UK, the US and the Far East. She has appeared with orchestras like the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra (Washington), Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Pittsburgh and Detroit Symphony Orchestras and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, to name just a few.
Ms. Chang’s most recent recording for EMI Classics, performances of Brahms and Bruch violin concertos with Kurt Masur and the Dresdner Philharmonie, was received to excellent critical and popular acclaim and was her 20th album for the label.
